Scott Lloyd – In the Garden EP

Scott Lloyd is a musician who has been on the scene for a while and has been receiving nothing but praise for his songwriting talents. He has been impressing audiences with his own style of folk Americana that has been influenced by legends such as Neil Young and Bob Dylan. It was a few years ago when I was introduced to his EP’s ‘Long Live You’, ‘The Northern Gate’ and ‘Give Me Something’. These showcase someone who has a wonderful gift of storytelling within his songs and the reviews from other people shows that it is not just me who thinks this way. Since then he has also released ‘Ironopolis’ and ‘The Game’ which continue to show off his songwriting talents. If you want to find out more about his previous EP’s then this information can be found on features Introducing Scott Lloyd and Ironopolis review.

Now to the present day, Scott Lloyd has released his new EP ‘In the Garden’ which he has described as very special to him. These were all written during a tough time in his life when anxiety and depression was hitting him hard. They cover themes such as loss, growing up, mental health, childhood and love, but creating them was therapeutic to him. Knowing the story behind this release and the standard of songwriting I have come to expect from Scott, I had high expectations.

The opening track ‘In the Garden’ delivered a different sound to what I was used to as he was no longer a solo acoustic performer and was now joined by his new band. This new direction could be heard on each song and with it adding more depth to what he had created.

This EP like the ones beforehand, is all about the lyrical talent as this is what makes the music of Scott Lloyd really standout. Since his debut release his storytelling style and technique has developed so much to what I hear today. This is easily his best collection of songs as the honest content and depth is captivating. The title track is a great example of this as he takes the listener down memory lane. He talks about kicking a ball around at the back of the house while waiting for his Sunday lunch with the family, this resonates with me. There are details within the song which will relate to most people and I’m sure it will bring some good memories back to you all.

Each track feels like a new chapter with something a little different to offer the listener. If I have to choose my favourite from them all then it would be Lavender. There is something about this one with its nice upbeat feel which keeps grabbing my attention with each listen. Scott’s vocals have always been good his tone on this one is has an irresistible warmth that pulls you in. It’s just one of those songs that just feels right.

I can definitely understand why Scott is proud of ‘In the Garden’ EP as to me, it is his best work to date.
