Introducing Jacko Hooper

I discovered the music of Jacko Hooper while I was looking for new music on the Tradiio website. If you are not aware of Tradiio then let me quickly explain, it’s a cool site which features new artists and bands offering you have the opportunity to support the music that matters by investing (using virtual currency) in the songs you believe are that good. This is where I heard Jacko’s song ‘Egg Shells’ and I have been a fan since then.

Brighton singer songwriter Jacko Hooper caught my attention due to his lyrical talent that is delivered by a voice that oozes raw emotion. In 2012 he released his debut EP ‘From Home’ which instantly showed that this was a musician with serious talent thanks to songs like ‘Freefall’ and ‘The River’. The EP showcased music which was atmospheric to support wonderful emotion packed vocals that give his sound so much depth.

Jacko used the website Kickstarter to get the help of his fans to create his follow up EP. As part of the project he offered a 3 track EP called ‘Three more songs, for you’ that gave fans a glimpse of how much his sound has grown especially with the song ‘The Old Stomping Ground’ which is a personal favourite of mine. I am glad to say that this project was successful and the EP ‘For You’ was released, I will talk about this more later in the post.

I wanted to learn more about this highly talented musician so I reached out to Jacko to see if he would take part in a mini interview. Well, he was more than happy to take part and to give us a glimpse into his world of music. This is what he had to say:

Who or what inspired you to become a musician and which musicians have influenced your sound?

I don’t really remember the exact moment that I decided music was the route i would go down but I do remember that when it did happen, that was the decision made. It was all i was going to do from that point on. It felt natural and homely and therapeutic to do. I fell in love when watching Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds on TV. Seeing people perform to such huge crowds was incredibly compelling, i think that may have been where the seed was planted.

I’m quite an anxious person and to do something which in theory is scary, and to feel so at home doing it, was an incredibly surreal and empowering thing.

You have a great song writing talent, do you have a set process when writing songs?

Well, thank you. Not really… Usually it happens very quickly when it goes as it should though. I would usually have a whole song mapped out within half an hour or so. Then maybe some slight changes. The recording process is entirely different but when it comes to sitting down at a keyboard or with my guitar it’s usually an idea on the instrument which leads to me singing random things over it until i sing the line that i was meant to be singing all along.

Talking about writing songs, which is your favourite from the new EP and why?

Hard to say. I also haven’t announced the track listings yet so i couldn’t really tell you yet anyway! It’s definitely a different feel though, but a very natural progression for me and these songs really mean a lot to me. It’s as honest as always.

If you were headlining a world tour, which 2 musicians/bands would you choose as YOUR support?

Well I run a company called Folklore where i have a lot of amazing artists come and play at different events that i put on so i have a lot of very talented friends… I think i would go with Paper Hawk and Deirdre Faegre. (Check them out).

What are you future plans and goals for your music?

Well the most important thing at the moment is getting this record all done and dusted and it is so nearly there. I have some pretty exciting shows to announce and when the EP is done there will be a lot of gigging and i’m incredibly excited. This year has felt like everything has been happening somewhat behind closed doors so i can’t wait to get back out there again and see what people think of the new material.

Let’s talk about Jacko Hooper’s Ep ‘For You’, I can only describe as a short but wonderful lesson in songwriting. There is something about the way he creates each song that has its own soul but has the common quality to captivate the listener. I have listened to this EP many times and tried to identify what is the stand out feature of his songwriting that hits the spot, but there are so many positives that picking one seems to do the others an injustice. Musically, the arrangement which focuses around his wonderful acoustic guitar style gives his music so much depth that sets up and maintains the appropriate emotion to fit each song. This is supported by a very impressive vocal talent that oozes emotion that feels like he is putting some of his soul into his music. This helps to give his music a more intimate sound which is great to hear. All this sounds great together but it would be nothing without the lyrics which offer so much that you really need to listen to them to fully understand how good they are put together. Jacko definitely has a great way with words.

There are no weak songs on this EP which makes this such an impressive release. ‘Run Away with Me’ and my favourite ‘Egg Shells’ both stand out for the same reasons. They both show a delicate and emotional soul within the song which is mirrored by the vocals and music. From all the songs that Jacko has created, these two perfectly demonstrate why his music needs to be heard as they shine a light on his impressive songwriting ability.

‘For You’ is an impressive collection of songs that will captivate and impress. This is a musician who carefully creates his music to the maximum due to a lyrical depth that grabs your attention and delivered with a voice that pulls you in. Overall, this is a must for anyone who likes a great acoustic sound with great lyrics and superb vocals. Give the EP a listen for yourself by listing his page at Tradiio (click HERE). If you like what you are hearing then head over to Jacko’s Bandcamp site (click HERE) to grab a copy today.

I can’t wait to hear what Jacko will release next as when you listen to music in release order you can hear his evolve into something more impressive. I think his best music is still to come and when it does expect something.
