Introducing Ernie Jackson

I was introduced to Ernie Jackson’s music after he contacted me via Twitter and suggested I check out his song ‘Shake It’ towards the end of 2014. I really liked this catchy song, so I was curious to hear what other music he had to offer, unfortunately back then there was not much. However, since then Ernie has been busy creating new songs and I have been able to listen to his music develop to a very impressive standard. This has made me a big fan of his sound and because of this, I needed to share his music with you all.

Ernie Jackson is a London based singer, songwriter and musician from North Yorkshire (UK). He has already received great reviews for the quality of his music and has received air play on some major radio stations. I wanted to learn more about this talented musician so I thought the best person to ask would be Ernie himself. I had the opportunity to talk to him about his music, influences and much more. This is what he had to say.

Who or what inspired you to become a musician and which musicians have influenced your sound?

I was influenced heavily by records that were played around the house. We always had music on at home. My Dad brought home some second hand vinyl records from the local pub jukebox and amongst them was a Little Richard record with Tutti Frutti on the A side and Keep a Knocking on the reverse – lift off!!

When you begin writing new songs, what is your usual process or do you do with the flow?

Writing songs happens lots of different ways, however, I usually try to get a good chord progression happening and then add vocals to it. I’m a huge fan of melody, so that usually is the driving force behind the tracks. Words are often picked up from conversations I’ve had/overheard or experiences of myself and those around me.

What is your favourite song you have written and why?

Really tough question!! I actually wrote a song for my nephew (it was a present using his vocals and will never see the light of day) but he loves it and still asks me to record it properly. Other than that, songs are like children, you love them all equally.

If you could write a song or collaborate with any musician, who would it be and why?

I’d love to write with lots of artists and producers. I would say one of my favourites would be Guy Chambers (worked with Robbie Williams) he knows how to put a tune together. Of course, Bruno Mars, Pharrell Williams and Mark Ronson would be fun. In a make believe world – Elvis, Fats Domino, The Beatles and all the doo wop giants from the 50’s (why not).

We know how good your music sounds but what can we expect from one of your live shows?

Why thank you!! At the moment the live shows are acoustic slots so a lot like the #pinchpunch videos. I’m currently looking to put together a full band to really make the live shows take off so watch this space!!

I hear on the grapevine that you are working towards an EP, what can we expect from it?

The EP is planned for later in the year. I’m always writing new tunes and would love to release a collection of songs. I’m hoping to include tracks from LA, some re-recorded #pinchpunch tracks and new ones too. There may be space for some acoustic songs, but we’ll have to see what comes out!

Apart from the EP, what are your future music goals?

I’d love to put out my debut album and play it live to as many people as possible. To be honest, writing songs is the ambition, so I’m kinda achieving that at the moment! i can’t really argue with that.

Let’s talk a little more about the music of Ernie Jackson. Like I said earlier, his sound has grown so much since I first heard his music. A great example of this is his project called the #pinchpinch series. This is all about Ernie releasing a new and original track on the first of each month which can be listened to either on his Soundcloud (click HERE) or YouTube (click HERE) pages.

Each song feels like it has been put together with care as this is a musician who takes great pride with each song that he creates. Musically, his arrangement sounds great with his trademark catchy vibe. A great example of this is his song ‘Hot Crazy City’ which gets your feet moving like they are possessed.

The main reason I feel that this musician’s music stands out so much for me is his vocal talent. He delivers this likable tone that reflects the feel of each song with an impressive control and range. This can be heard on my favourite song ‘Can’t give you up’ which also offers my favourite set of lyrics from his songs. Ernie does have an impressive talent when it comes to the lyrical side of song writing.

With music like this on offer you can understand why I think Ernie Jackson is one to watch and why I needed to share his music with you. If you want to find out more about his music and more then head over to his website at ErnieJacksonMusic.com or visit his Facebook or Twitter pages. You can also use these sites to find out when his new EP will be released as well as future gigs.

As always, go support your favourite independent musician/band if their music matters to you. Without your help they can not continue to do what they love which is to share their music with you! Hopefully this will now include the music of Ernie Jackson, if so go tell the world about his music today!
