Introducing Airport Impressions

Airport Impressions found me via Twitter and asked if I would check out their music. I headed over to their YouTube page (click HERE) and clicked on the video for the song ‘Walk with Me’. I really liked their style of rock which had some impressive vocals. I checked out a few more songs and you know the rest, I became a fan.

This four piece band from the island of Malta bring us their blend of pop rock which includes some folk and country. This combination feels like a blend of The Killers crossed with Mumford & Son, I know this sounds like a weird combination, but I only say it as I hear it. In 2005 Errol Sammut (vocals/guitar) and Johann Schembri’s (lead guitar) had a 6 month stay in Ireland which changed how they would create the music they were producing. They had their minds opened on how they wrote their songs and the new direction that they wanted to take their music. This resulted in Chris Curmi (bass) and Steve Farrugia (drums) joining the guys to create the Airport Impressions that we see today. The guys are a leading name in Malta’s music scene but they are wanting to share their music with the world.

I had the opportunity to catch up with the guys from Airport Impressions to ask them a few questions about the band, their music and a little more. This is what they had to say:

How did Airport Impressions come together and is there a story behind the name?

The origin of Airport Impressions can be traced back to Errol and Johann’s acoustic project and a fruitful six month stay in Ireland back in 2005. Then known as Riverstone, the two of them infiltrated the local live circuit with their rousing acoustic sets, garnering weekly residencies in key music venues as well as a regular audience that followed them from gig to gig. At some point however, Riverstone became too small a vehicle for their broader musical aspirations. It was time to aim for bigger things, and that laid down the foundation for what was to become Airport Impressions.  Airport Impressions, a name was inspired by those feelings which most people tend to experience while waiting at the airport.

How would you describe the bands sound and which musicians have helped influence this?

We try and have a consistent thread of ‘our sound’, but at the same time, the influence of a multitude of genres shines through. There are hints of Country in the music, Folk-Rock, Indie.  Influences have been Johnny Cash, Mumford and Sons, U2,  Sometimes you write for the sake of writing,” Johann added. The Country-rock elements in their songs come from Errol and Johann whilst the rock influence derives from Steve and Chris. “Our sound could be compared to a recipe. We all bring our own sound and thoughts to the table and mix. I believe this has been very successful,” Errol said. Music producers in the studio also give their input towards the final version.

Which is the bands favourite song that the band has produced and why?

Bands fave would be Star Signs released April last year especially since the band had to act as jailed convicts who flee prison throughout the video.. a part we loved doing a lot!!

If you were headlining a world tour and you could choose are 2 support acts, who would it be and why?

2 support acts would definitely include Interpol and Alt-J… Both their sounds have that psychedelic and immersive feel to them. They both remind us of our roots and influences.

What are the future plans and goals for the band?

The future for the band is exciting… We begin our first UK tour.  We kick the week off with the high-profile festival in Edinburgh, Midstock on Sept. 3rd. The headline band has not been announced yet, but The Fratellis were last year.   From there we will do a once week tour in Scotland and hope to play Glasgow, Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness and more.   This month we do have a new music video being released off our Mariette album and excited that we teamed up with Malta Hospice for the event.  We are really looking forward to bringing our music to the UK and making news fans, showcasing our music and make a good impression on everyone.

In 2012 the band released their debut album ‘Minutes of a Lifetime’ which is jam packed with so many examples of their quality songwriting talents. From the start ‘David played Guitar’ shows of their blend of pop rock which is fused with a few other genres. With catchy hooks, great guitar riffs and more, you can hear why this album was received to great reviews. If you plan to check out out this album then I recommend ‘Walk with Me’ and ‘Perfect Nature’ which are my personal favourite from ‘Minutes of a Lifetime’ album.

I have already mentioned a few of my highlights from the album but if I have to recommend one song from the album then my choice would be easy, it would be ‘Star Signs’. I love how the guitars take charge on this song as they can deliver a powerful infectious sound one moment then slow everything down to let you catch your breath. The lyrics again show off the bands talent and give us another catchy hook to sing along to. I like the video for this song which I have added below.

Overall, Airport Impressions are a very impressive folk/rock band that deliver a lot within their music. Their infectious sound and lyrics will have you singing along before you know it. I recommend that you head over to their YouTube page to check out more of their music. If you like what you are hearing then you can purchase both their albums from the usual online stores like Amazon and iTunes or even from their website (click HERE).

It’s great to see that the guys are busy spreading the word about their music and coming over to UK shores, hopefully I might be able to catch one of their gigs. I’ll be checking out their website to find out more about their tour which you can also learn more about the band while you are there. I’m hoping that a new album is not to far away but as I am following them on their social media sites at Facebook and Twitter I will get the information if/when new music will be available.

Great sounding music can only get musicians/bands so far and it needs our help to go further. You need to support the music by purchasing it and telling the world all about it. Go and support the music that matters to you today and hopefully this will now include the great sound of Airport Impressions.
