Interview with Josh Kemp

Last year I was asked to check out the video for ‘Imaginary Friend: What a Wonderful World’ by Josh Kemp. Not knowing what to expect, I decided to give it a watch and was blown away not only with the song but the video too. Lasting over 6 minutes, this video has beautiful views from South East Asia which he uses as a back drop to share something that is special to him. This is what he has to say about it ‘The last 12 months have been pretty turbulent globally and personally and I’ve been doing my best to focus on positivity throughout the year. This release is no exception and is dedicated to the unsung heroes that the media miss, the news neglects and that fame escapes.’ After hearing this song, I wanted to find out more about this singer songwriter.

Josh Kemp creates music with a positive feel and the way he does so makes it hard to resist. It definitely feels like he loves what he does and this comes across when you listen to his music which is shared through his acoustic guitar, piano and loop pedal. This winning formula has been catching many peoples attention and doing so has seen him perform over 70 shows in the UK and Europe during 2016.

As always, I like to get to know a little more about the musicians that I feature and Josh is no exception. I reached out to him to see if he would answer a few questions for him and as he is a cool guy, he said yes. We talked about his influences, songwriting and a little more. This is what he had to say:

What was it that inspired you to become a musician and who helped to inspire your sound?

I found music when I was 4, I stumbled upon a piano and began to improvise and that moment captured me. But my sound has gone through a lot of different sections, I’m heavily influenced by bands and musicians like Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and Plan B but I’ve also been heavily influenced by musical theatre, film music and Folk like Chris de Burgh!

Your songwriting style has a positive feel about it, is this important when you write new songs.

It’s not important to me to write in a certain way but I only write when I feel inspired and 9/10 the acts of every day heroes or stories of bravery or compassion inspire me more than heartbreak or vindictive behaviour

Talking of songwriting, which is your favourite song from your collection and why?

It’s hard to choose, I think my newest single U.R. means most to me, mostly because it tells the story of several friends who had a pretty rotten 2016 and rose to do incredible things for the ones they love, they inspired the song and I feel it’s so relevant for how the song turned out!

If there was a movie to be made about you and your music, who would you choose to play you and why?

Haha, tough question, probably Simon Pegg! He’s got the ‘bumbling through life in an amusing way’ character down!

Finally, what are your future plans and goals for your music?

Lots! EU tour in the summer, UK tour in the autumn, new EP in April, finishing the musical I’m writing, and getting into writing film scores! Keep up to date 🙂

Josh’s debut release ‘Sofa Surfin’ is a great little EP which has this cool upbeat pop vibe that is infectious. It definitely shines a light on his songwriting abilities which ‘Stupid Cupid’ and ‘Chatterbox’ perfectly showcase.

The end of 2016 saw Josh return with his EP ‘A Wonderful World’. No disrespect to his previous release but the calibre of this EP is so much stronger. As soon as you listen to the opening track ‘U.R’ you get to hear how much his vocals have developed as his tone and control bring his lyrics to life. Next up is my favourite ‘Imaginary Friend’ that shows how his lyrical talent has grown because of the detail and emotion within its story. ‘Leap of Faith’ ends the EP on a fun note as the energy on this one is turned up and features a nice little rap towards the end.

Overall, this EP is a great addition to my collection which at times reminds me of Jason Mraz (a compliment) and confirms that Josh Kemp is here and he means business. I highly recommend that you check out his music from his Bandcamp, Soundcloud and YouTube pages. If you agree with me about how good he sounds then you can purchase his EP’s from Amazon and iTunes.

It’s good to hear that we don’t have to wait too long for new music from Josh. Like he said ‘Keep up to date’ and you can do so by following him on his social media sites at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can also find this information and more his website at

As always, a little reminder that independent and unsigned artists need the support of their fans to help them grow by spreading the word. So, if you like what you hear from Josh Kemp them jump on your social media sites and tell the world all about him TODAY!
