Interview Fran Minney

I want to take the time to talk about ‘The Chase’ EP which is the new release from the wonderful songstress Fran Minney. I have been a fan of this Leeds based musician for a while now and have previously featured her debut EP ‘Leaving Our Bodies’ on the site (see Introducing Fran Minney).

During March of this year, Fran launched her Kickstarter project to help make her latest EP become reality with the help of her fans. As I am here taking about the new EP you can guess that this project was a success. I am so glad it was as this is a special collection of songs which I will talk about later in this post as I now want to share a little conversation I had with the talented Fran Minney. We talked about her new music and a little more:

After such a strong debut, how did you approach creating the new EP and what were your goals for it?

My goals stayed much the same in creating my second EP as in creating the first; I wanted to authentically tell the stories of my relationships to celebrate, heal and hope. This time though I wanted to really fine tune every detail as much as possible as the first EP was recording in only a few days and there are things I would have loved to spend more time on. For ‘The Chase’ we took 2-3 years developing the songs to create something we could be really proud of and I feel like we achieved that.

During the creation of ‘The Chase’ EP what were your high and low points?

I would say one of the highest high points was reaching my Kickstarter goal! I was absolutely blown away with people’s kindness and generosity in supporting the creation of this EP. Other high points were the times playing through the songs with my lovely band and especially debuting the songs live and getting the great reactions from those that came to see us! It was so fun to work with musicians who were passionate about the music too and hear the songs I’d created really come to life with their input.

The most challenging point was the first time we lost the recordings! We had recorded almost the entire EP only to find it was somewhat unusable because of technical difficulties which was disappointing but ultimately gave us more time and motivation to work on the songs even more.

How did it feel when you heard the final version of the EP?

It was such an incredible relief to hear the final version of my EP. Just so relieving and freeing and exhilarating knowing that all the hard work and years had paid off into something I was happy and excited to share with others.

Which is your favourite song from this release and why?

My favourite song is probably ‘Blind’ because it’s a little bit of a departure from the other tracks and lets me explore my lower range in a way I don’t normally. It’s not often I write a song of this kind and it’s always a pleasure to broaden my horizons.

For those people wanting to come and see you live, what can they expect from your live shows?

My live shows are often intimate acoustic affairs – very heartfelt and friendly. I always love to talk to my audience during and after and engage them by expressing the stories and emotions connected to these songs as honestly as possible.

If Hollywood came knocking and wanted to make a movie about your music, who would you like to play you and why?

Wow that is one great question! And a very difficult one to answer haha. Could we put Zooey Deschanel in a blue wig and some fake piercings? I just love her and she’s such a talented lady, I’d be so honoured to be portrayed by her.

What are your future plans and goals for your music?

My future plans are to really dive into edgier and weirder writing. The new songs I’ve been writing are still very “me” in terms of the vocals but I’m wanting to experiment with sounds from nature and electronic sounds. I’m just excited to keep growing and developing.

Finally, is there anything you like to say to any new listeners out there or maybe to any of your fans who are ready this?

Thank you so much for giving me a chance! I cannot explain how much I appreciate it, I don’t think I ever thought I’d even get this far where anyone cares at all, I just love writing and singing so much and it’s a huge pleasure to hear that anyone else is enjoying what comes out of my mouth. Thank you!

It has been almost 2 years since Fran released her debut EP and her latest offering ‘The Chase’ is not a new chapter in her world of music but this is a whole new story. As she confirmed in the interview she wanted ‘to authentically tell the stories of my relationships to celebrate, heal and hope’ which was the basis of her last EP but she has done so by taking her songwriting skills to another level. For me, Fran sounds more confident and free in the way she has put these collection of songs together by bringing more of her own unique style to this release which the opening track ‘Awake’ perfectly demonstrates.

Musically, Fran delivers a wonderful blend of alternative folk with dashes of rock and pop that help to give each track an individual feel that collectively give this release variety. But as always with this songstress it is her vocals that steal the show. This side to her music has always impressed me but this time round it has more of a diversity thanks to her unique and compelling style. My favourite song ‘Blind’ offers a cool bluesy tone which I haven’t really heard before but I really like it and would love to hear more like that in the future. If you want to hear how good Fran can sound then listen to ‘Power Game’, where she switches between a powerful and delicate tone with effortless control which is wonderful to hear.

I highly recommend that you click HERE to give this wonderful collection of songs a listen as ‘The Chase’ EP will not disappoint. From this Bandcamp site you can also listen to her debut release ‘Leaving Our Bodies’ and purchase either or both EP’s while you are there.

I am already wanting to hear more from Fran as her sound is still evolving and I can only foresee her music going from strength to strength. Personally, I really hope she gets the opportunity to release a full length album to show the world what she is capable of creating, fingers crossed this will happen.
